As stated in the Advisory Committee Charter, the purpose of this group is to provide advice "on the development of a reuse plan and on matters relating to future uses of the Fort Hancock Historic District of Gateway National Recreation Area." This committee will follow its approved operating procedures to help the park develop a plan which complements Gateway's General Management Plan (GMP). Members were chosen by the Secretary of the Interior in accordance with the Federal Advisory Committee Act of 1972 (FACA).

Public Law: The 1972 Act of Congress which created Gateway National Recreation Area.
General Management Plan (GMP): Currently under revision, this document guides the park's goals and strategies for the future.
Compendium: An annually updated list of park rules which are subject to the discretionary authority of the park superintendent. These rules protect both park visitors and resources and have the force of law.
